Button keen to stay at Brawn GP

Jenson Button has assured fans of F1 (and his team, Brawn GP) that he plans to stay with the team for the forseeable future, after his recent world championship win at Brazil. Button, who has been at the team for some years during it’s B.A.R Honda days, is keen to stay with the team that he’s soldiered on with for the past few years:

“The team might have changed names and it might have shrunk in size but I love the atmosphere of this team and the way that we all pull together in the difficult times – and we’ve been through a lot of difficult times in the past.”

Button clearly feels a close bond with the team, after originally planning to move from B.A.R. to Williams, but paying his way out of the deal – he’s worked the long haul with the team.

Honda struggled to make an impact with the car over recent years. Ross Brawn moved over from Ferrari for the 2008 season, but resigned to the fact that there was little he could do to turn around the fortunes of the team that year, concentrating on the 2009 season.

In December 2008 Honda pulled out of F1, leaving the team with no financial backing, and no owners. Button and his team mate Rubens Barrichello stuck with the team, always believing they would pull through in the end.

Ross Brawn eventually announced a buyout of the team in early 2009 which meant that they had to significantly downsize the team cutting 270 jobs, with Button taking a season paycut from £5m to £3m in order to carry on with his race seat for Brawn.

“I want to be with a team that can win. I have become world champion with a team that nobody ever thought would win the championship, especially in their first year,”

Button and Brawn have waited until now to talk about the future, rather than distracting themselves as they both fight for world championships. Nick Fry on Sunday confirmed that Brawn were 100% behind retaining Button, so it appears the feelings are mutual.

“It’s not about the money,” Jenson claims, but we’re pretty sure it’ll be factored in since his stock went up after the weekend results! :)
