Midnight (Somewhere) Predictions for Abu Dhabi

Sunday, November 1st, 2009 - Posted by Victoria Reid

Abu Dhabi

Yet again, the time differences for Formula1 fans in America make it late at night (though not that late when considering the soon to be implemented time change) while early in the morning for Europe, and nearly time to rise for those actually participating in the sport, at the 2009 Abu Dhabi GP.  Sunday’s evening race in the Middle East will have Lewis Hamilton on pole position, leading the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, while the Brawns of Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button finish out the top five.  Saturday’s qualifying was an accurate portrayal of the transition at the circuit from day into night, with all the lights on while it was still light and keeping everything bright as darkness fell.

Brawn Win 2009 World Championship

Something amazing happened in Formula 1 in Brazil yesterday. The result that occured had long been expected, even from the first race back in Australia, but yesterday Brawn GP and their British driver Jenson Button proved all of their doubters wrong, by becoming World Champions.

Brawn were clearly the underdogs going into this Formula 1 season. Their previous owners Honda had decided late in 2008 that they were pulling out of the expensive sport, leaving a team without financial backing, or an owner. At the last minute Ross Brawn stepped in with a management buyout, putting everything he had on the line. The team still had it’s drivers, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello. They stuck with the team despite the uncertainty, trusting Brawn would pull the team through.

As pre season testing kicked off, Brawn were absent for the most part, using the last sessions available to them to test their new car. What happened then alarmed alot of the teams, they were fast, really fast. The big teams, clutching for reasons why focussed on the rear diffuser that Brawn had deployed. Many said Brawn’s interpretation of the rules was too much, with others saying they had merely been more clever than the other teams.

Ari Vatanen Responds to Dirty Campaign

Ari Vatanen

Ari Vatanen has today posted a blog article in response to Jean Todt’s claims that he is running a dirty tricks campaign for the FIA presedency. Directly, Ari responds:

“…if I speak about change, democracy and transparency, it seems to be wrong and it is taken as a personal insult against all the people who have been involved with the FIA before these elections”

Vatanen, a front runner alongside Jean Todt is seen by most as the sensible choice. Todt’s strong links with Ferrari, and his attitude to potentially running the FIA has caused some alarm amongst the camps.

Michael Schumacher yesterday wrote a letter to FIA members endorsing Todt, where he stated:

“I am deeply convinced Jean Todt is the right person to be the next president of the FIA. Having worked together with him for nearly fifteen years, I believe I am entitled to say this with such strong certainty”

It appears that as the election comes close next week, Todt is pulling out the big guns in order to sway the vote his way. Causing a stir with Vatanen, and subsequently Schumacher’s seemingly out of the blue letter to FIA members will surely be the start to the last shot of adrenalin in his campaign.

Vatanen however, remains calm during troubled times. His blog continues with some further insight into how he would run the FIA, and how touched he would be to receive the position:

“Of course I know it would be such a touching moment that I would not find any words at all. The feeling would be surely like my first international win when I stood on the podium. That moment you never ever forget.”

We know who we’re gunning for…

Brawn GP Look to Lady Luck for Brazil

Brawn GP Fingers Crossed

The nerves in the Brawn GP garage must be tense during the build up to what could finally finish off the best debut year for a Formula 1 team. Brawn, just 0.5 points away from securing the constructers championship must feel like that is definitely theirs this weekend, however their drivers fortunes are less clear.

Jenson Button is currently leading his closest rival, Rubens Barrichello by 14 points, with Sebastian Vettel a close third with 69 points. Both Barrichello and Vettel can mathematically win it this year if Button doesn’t come through with the points, so with the constructers done and dusted, it’s down to Brawn to ensure that one of their drivers hits the top spot.

Button just needs to secure a podium this weekend at Brazil to take the drivers title this weekend, even if Barrichello was to win. That may be a tall order when you look back at his recent achievements. Most say that he’s gone off the boil since his 6 out of 7 wins at the start of the season, his luck also played well in recent races.

Brawn have struggled since those first 7 races, Silverstone a real low point for an excited Button, who just couldn’t figure out what was wrong with his “awesome” car.

Who knows… with a snipsy bit of luck this weekend (and we all know Jenson has had a fair chunk of that already this season), he may just walk away with the drivers title. However, what the fans really want to see is Button steaming through, showing his talent, and making it count.

The fans want luck to play no part…. remember Brazil last year with Lewis? It felt good, but just not THAT good!
