Red Bull Finish as McLaren & Ferrari Despair

Monday, April 5th, 2010 - Posted by Formula1Blogger

So the Malaysian Grand Prix didn’t end up a water fest as pretty much everyone predicted. In fact, not a single drop of rain fell during the race. Many also predicted the biggest headline out of the race would be the weather, how awful it was, and how the race time needs to be changed again etc etc.

But that didn’t happen – so the second surprise to pop out was the Red Bull 1-2 finish. Yes, I said finish. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber have both been plagued recently by dodgy cars, causing Vettel in particular to lose two Grand Prix from commanding positions.

Mark Webber has fared better, however he’s had his share of gremlins too in the car, however luckily during practice sessions.

Despite all that, Vettel pipped Webber to the first corner in Sepang after lights out, and the rest they say, was a parade… (well at least for them it was). Neither Vettel nor Webber moved from P1 and P2 respectively throughout the race, and were never bothered at all by the competition.

Vettel’s now infamous “Number 1″ finger pumps told the whole story at the end of the race – he was clearly relieved to have made it (a) to the finish, and (b) in P1 – probably in that order. However, have they just got lucky this time, or have the Red Bull team figured out their issues with reliability? If it’s the latter, we can say goodbye to the championship race – it’ll all be about the Red Bulls.

That said, they were let off a bit this time over. Both Ferraris and McLarens were starting from pretty much the back of the pack, and had some 10+ cars to go through before getting close to the podiums. Lewis Hamilton predictably steamed through the pack, making up a large number of places, with team mate Jenson Button going backwards, forwards, backwards.

The Ferrari boys also rued their decision on Saturday, which ultimately screwed their race on Sunday. Fernando Alonso’s engine blowout on the penultimate lap was the signing off of a terrible weekend for the team, who were hoping to be back up there. The BBC even reported that it almost looked like Alonso forced the blowout after a frustrating race.

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg needs a mention. Other than the rolling headline that never disappears that he finished ahead of his team mate (you know, Schumacher), he actually finished P3, grabbing the first Mercedes GP podium this year.

What this has done is setup an interesting top 3 in the drivers championship. A top 3 which actually holds 5 drivers:

  1. Felipe Massa (39)
  2. Fernando Alonso, Sebastien Vettel (37)
  3. Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg (35)

That’s pretty tight, and hold’s the top 4 teams. It’s anyones game right now, but could we call it this early? Let’s have a vote:

After 3 races, who do you think will take the championship?

  • Sebastien Vettel (71%, 12 Votes)
  • Fernando Alonso (18%, 3 Votes)
  • Lewis Hamilton (12%, 2 Votes)
  • Mark Webber (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Jenson Button (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Felipe Massa (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Nico Rosberg (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Michael Schumacher (-1%, 0 Votes)

Alonso and Massa have new engines for Grand Prix

Sunday, March 14th, 2010 - Posted by Jack Sargeant

Both Ferrari’s of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa will have new engines ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Felipe Massa, who qualified 2nd, has had his engine he used up to qualifying yesterday replaced as a completely precautionary step, as it is showing abnormal parameters. Similar abnormalities showed up in 3rd place qualifier Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari Type 56 engine, meaning it has also been replaced.

Neither driver will be penalised for these changes: you only get a penalty if you change engines twice in a weekend or exceed the 8 engines-per-season limit. Also in accordance with the rules, the replaced engines can be used in future practice sessions.

Qualifying Recap: Vettel takes Pole in Bahrain

Saturday, March 13th, 2010 - Posted by Formula1Blogger

The first qualifying session of the Formula One 2010 season has finished, with Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel stealing the pole position from Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. More surprising was the fact that Massa managed to pip Alonso to P2.

In the first session, nearly all of the new team’s drivers failed to make it through. Interestingly Karun Chandhok managed to get out on track after all, coming last – but getting some well needed laps under his belt before his first F1 GP on Sunday. Quickly following him were Trulli, Kovalainen, Di Grassi, Senna, Glock and Alguersuari.

The second session quickly followed with both Jenson Button and Michael Schumacher finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with the front runners. Both drivers scraped through in 9th and 10th position to make it through to Q3. The only major scalp to go during this session was Rubens Barrichello, who managed 11th.

The final session saw the top 10 drivers running on empty, desperate to get a quick lap, whilst saving the tyres that they now have to start the race with. Vettel was first out on track, with no one showing any clear sign they were going to catch him after that.

Michael Schumacher again struggled to keep up with his younger Mercedes team mate, Nico Rosberg – only making P7, 3 tenths down. This wasn’t new for Schumacher – who has struggled all weekend so far keeping up with Rosberg, and is yet to beat him. In race pace however, it could be a different story.

Jenson Button also struggled to keep up with his McLaren team mate, Lewis Hamilton. Button and Hamilton had been pretty similar in times and performance over previous sessions, but Button just couldn’t string it together for the final push, finishing P8.

Arguably, Rubens Barrichello looks to be in a very strong position in P11. Whilst not immediately obvious, Barrichello gets to pick his tyre compound, selecting the hard tyre, whilst everyone in front of him is on the soft. This means he’ll potentially last far longer out on track and may make up some significant track position.

That said, Vettel and the Ferrari’s are in world of their own, nearly half a second at least in front of the competition. Expect these guys to bring it home, barring any major race incidents. The question is, will they be in the same qualifying positions when the pass the chequered flag? Only tomorrow will tell.

See you on Twitter tomorrow at 1200 GMT for full race coverage.

Massa dedicates 500 Miles of Granja Viana to Felipinho.

Felipe Massa

Ferrari F1 driver Felipe Massa went close to winning in his own karting event recently – Desafio Internacional das Estrelas, including winning one of the two races, but he finished in second to Michael Schumacher, who won the event overall.

However Massa has just won the 500 Miles of Granja Viana event near Sao Paulo in Brazil, alongside team mates Lucas di Grassi, and Stock Car Lights driver Julio Campos, after just under 11 hours of racing. He dedicated his win to his new born baby Felipinho.

Massa said;

“Together with the victory gained in Florianopolis last week this was a very important goal for me after I had dreamt about getting back onto the track for a long time. I want to dedicate this victory to my son, it’s my way to say how much I love him.”

Finishing in second place was a team featuring former Toyota F1 star Ricardo Zonta, while Rubens Barrichello’s team came third.

Force India keeping options open.

Force India are obviously keeping their options for 2010 drivers open – no less than 6 drivers are in the running for the seats, including the drivers who ended last season with the team; Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi.

Giancarlo Fisichella who went to Ferrari last season to cover for the injured Felipe Massa will most likely stay at the Italian team as test driver next season with Massa and Fernando Alonso having the race seats, although Fisichella has not completely ruled himself out, saying:

“Why not? It is open. It could be Force India. There are a lot of teams without drivers so far.”

Another driver in the running is former Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr. who was heavily involved in the ‘Crashgate’ scandal, although it seems his whistleblowing has not deterred Force India. Piquet said:

“I am close to Force India at the moment, but to me NASCAR is very interesting, so I don’t know yet what is going to happen. I don’t want to take a decision without knowing how things work here in the United States, so I came to be with the drivers and team owners.

“It is clear that the F1 cars are very much better technologically – the best in the world – but I find that if it is enjoyable, it doesn’t matter if I am racing in karts. The important thing is to compete.”

The other two drivers in the running are Pedro de la Rosa who was denied a drive at the new team Campos for the lack of Spanish sponsors that come with him, although he is still a possibility for the Force India drive.

The final driver rumoured to join the team sure is an interesting one – Scot Paul di Resta. Di Resta finished 3rd in this years prestigious DTM championship driving for the AMG Mercedes team, including one race win on home soil at Brands Hatch. Di Resta is set for a test at Jerez for the team in early December.

Sandy start to Alonso’s Ferrari career.

Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa at Maranello

Fernando Alonso’s first public outing as a Ferrari driver didn’t go quite as planned as he ended up stuck in a gravel trap alongside new teammate Felipe Massa, in front of more than 17,000 spectators who came on the conclusive day to watch the Finali Mondiali, the traditional event of the Prancing Horse held since 1994 at the end of the motorsport season.

Ferrari explained the events of the day on their website:

Today was the first day when the whole 2010 Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro came together: next to Alonso there were Felipe Massa, Giancarlo Fisichella, Marc Gené and Luca Badoer. Fernando’s public debut as a Ferrarista started with an entertaining episode. When the Spanish driver, on board of a Ferrari California with his future teammate Felipe and driven by Chairman Luca di Montezemolo, tried to get as close to the grandstands in turn 1 as possible, the car got stuck in the gravel of the run-off area. Therefore the spectators got a good view and enough time to greet their local hero. The trio was “rescued” by the second California on the track, driven by the President of the Comunità Valenciana, Fernando Camps, with Valencia’s mayor Rita Barberà on board.

Schumacher: Comeback Decision Emotional

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 - Posted by Randhy Fazralimanda

Michael Schumacher & Felipe Massa

Michael Schumacher admits his decision to agree to make a Formula One comeback earlier this year with Ferrari was based on emotion rather than rationale.

Seven-times World Champion Schumacher accepted a request from Ferrari to replace the injured Felipe Massa for the remainder of the 2009 season, but a neck injury forced him to call off his return.

“It wasn’t really a rational decision, it was an emotional decision, which, at the time, I thought ‘why not, it’s part-time, it could be funny,’” the German told reporters in Beijing.

“Having the meeting with him (Luca Di Montezemolo) I looked at all the points, in particular that it was Felipe, who is like a brother to me. Part of the reason I retired was to hand over the car to him because he deserved to stay in a team with a top car.

“So taking the fact that it was him, having the accident, having to suffer, it was very easy to convince myself, so I finally said ‘yes, I will try’.”

Schumacher Refuses to Rule Out F1 Return

Michael Schumacher

Michael Schumacher has refused to rule out the possibility of making a return to F1, revealing that his neck injury is on the mend. Earlier this season, Ferrari fans let out a cheer as the Scuderia announced that Schumacher would replace the injured Felipe Massa in the European GP.

However, that joy soon turned to disappointment when it was revealed that the neck injury he had sustained in a motorbike accident earlier in the year meant it was not possible for him to race.

But with that injury finally healing, Schumacher says he could yet make a brief comeback.

“From now to the end of the year, my neck injury will be healed to the point where I could drive again,”

“I have nothing to prove to anyone, not even myself. I still slightly regret having retired three years ago but there’s no reason whatsoever for me to definitively announce that I will not come back.

“The life I lead makes me happy but who knows that will happen a few months or a year down the line?”

Schumacher was speaking with Der Speigel magazine.

Massa’s Comments “Not Important” – Alonso

Friday, October 16th, 2009 - Posted by Formula1Blogger

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso has responded to Felipe Massa’s recent comments about the Renault “crashgate” incident during interviews with the press. Massa this week claimed that Alonso was more than aware about the plan for Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash his car at the Singapore Grand Prix. Alonso responded:

“It’s not very important for me. I’m not too worried. It will not affect anything, me or the relationship. I actually think we will be great. I think it will be a good group and we will be very strong next year.”

This was a pretty measured response from Alonso, desperately trying to dampen any potential fires before his move over to Ferrari in 2010. In fact, Alonso is more than happy to “have a chat” with Massa this weekend at the Brazilian Grand Prix

“Maybe we will have a chat, but I’m sure it won’t be about this matter. If we do have a chat it will be more about his recovery, that he seems well, about his experience at Ferrari.”

We’re not convinced about this ourselves. This isn’t the greatest way to potentially start a new racing partnership. Massa ended up retracting his statements yesterday (probably because Ferrari told him to), and claiming they were just “a hunch”, however he’s obviously still hurting from the whole incident.

We speculate that the reason why he is so fired up about the whole thing is due to the fact that he now realises the 2008/09 season was now his last real chance at the title. He likely feels that Ferrari will give priority to the Alonso, a proven 2 time world champion, over Massa – who has always struggled to come out on top within the Ferrari driver team.

In fact, we’d put money on the partnership not lasting more than one season. This is clearly going to be a McLaren 2007 situation, however this time Alonso will win out.

Massa still upset by Renault Race Fix

Thursday, October 15th, 2009 - Posted by Formula1Blogger

Felipe Massa

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has whipped up a new storm within the F1 paddock (and Brazil for that matter) with recent comments about the Renault crash scandal. He suggests fellow Renault driver Fernando Alonso was also in the know about the race fixing. Autosport quotes Massa as saying:

“…Alonso was part of the problem. He knew. We can not know it [but] of course he knew. [It's an] absolute certainty.”

Ferrari were quick to confirm Massa’s remarks by releasing a follow up statement to the press:

“What I’ve said is the outcome of a hunch I’ve had and is not based on any concrete evidence,”

Massa is clearly still very upset with the whole thing. Our “hunch” is that he now realises that this was probably the only season where he would have won the drivers championship. Since Alonso is now joining Ferrari in 2010, Massa will likely be driver number 2 for the team, with Alonso certain to take more of the Ferrari win pie (based on previous records).
