No hope for Toyota – Team not for sale!

Monday, November 9th, 2009 - Posted by Formula1Blogger

John Howett

If there were any dreams that the Toyota team may yet again rise from the ashes and “do a Brawn”, they have been quickly dashed as ex-Team Principal John Howett has confirmed that the team is not for sale. It appears that the option to put the team up for sale has,

“…already been discussed and rejected. Maybe these ideas can be reopened but, at the moment, it would appear not”

Assumingly by Toyota’s corporate management. This leaves existing employees and drivers in little doubt that they should be looking for new jobs in 2010. Timo Glock is rumoured to be looking at a Renault seat, whilst Jarno Trulli seems sure to be going to Lotus to fill their “experienced” driver expectations.

Fill-in driver Kamui Kobayashi remains the final question mark of the three, and arguably the most interesting after having an excellent final 2 races of the season filling in for injured Glock. Kobayashi previously said he’d love a Lotus seat, but that seems unlikely.

Kobayashi: I could have been making sushi

Kamui Kobayashi

Toyota driver Kamui Kobayashi has said that when he was driving in GP2 earlier this season, prior to covering for Timo Glock in a F1 Toyota race seat, he no longer had any money to race in the F1 feeder series and almost went to work in his father’s sushi restaurant, until the lucky break of an F1 drive following a bad crash from the German, Timo Glock.

Kobayashi has impressed in his 2 F1 races ending this season, finishing 9th and 6th respectively prompting strong rumours that he will be offered a Toyota race seat for 2010, a rumour strengthened by the Toyota F1 boss saying that he was impressed with Kobayshi.

The 23 year old Japanese driver Kobayshi said:

“I have no budget, no budget. So I cannot drive GP2 next year. I would probably go back to Japan to maybe work with my father in his sushi restaurant.”

“It was like that two months ago, seriously. When I was 16 years old I worked there, making sushi.”

Toyota Motorsport President John Howett praised Kobayashi for his fighting spirit, but Kobayashi wondered what the fuss was about.

“I don’t need to be worried for me because it is not the Mafia.”

“I have tried to be a Toyota driver for next year but I didn’t know how much I could show before. I just had to do the best at each moment and it seems to have finally worked well.”

“Still I have many things to do. I have to improve qualifying and I need time. But the last two weeks have been quite good for me.”

Toyota likely to give Kobayashi 2010 seat

Kamui Kobayashi

After another impressive race standing in for injured Timo Glock, Kamui Kobayashi has made such an impact on his team Toyota that they can no longer argue that he will likely get a seat within the team in 2010. John Howett, Team Principal spoke with Autosport after Kobayashi’s 6th place result, and they asked him if Kobayashi will get one of the drives next season,

“It looks like it. We will have to give really serious consideration, as he has really shown very good strong results. I am very impressed. We were very happy again. What we like is his real fighting spirit. He is not intimidated by anybody. It’s very positive.”

This follows last week’s comments from Howett where he was previously impressed by Kobayashi’s abilities during the Brazilian Grand Prix. Toyota are believed to be looking at a number of drivers for 2010, including Heikki Kovalainen and Adrian Sutil – and of course, their existing drivers Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli.

It is rumoured that the team will announce their plans in late November.

Kamui Kobayashi

Kamui Kobayashi has been confirmed to replace Timo Glock again this weekend for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the Toyota team.

Glock had a medical check up on his damaged ribs yesterday in order to see whether he was fit enough to race, this now appears to not be the case.

Kobayashi impressed last weekend in Brazil where he fought a tough race. John Howett, Team Principal of Toyota admitted that the team are considering him for a race seat in 2010, as they are Glock, Jarno Trulli and Kimi Raikkonen.

FOTA Welcome Jean Todt to FIA Presidency

FOTA

The Formula One Team Association (FOTA) has issued a press release congratulating newly elected FIA President Jean Todt to his new role. Ex colleague at Ferrari and now FOTA Chairman Luca di Montezemolo said:

“I would like to send my best wishes to Jean Todt in his new role, as I have always appreciated his ability, dedication and commitment. I am sure that, under his guidance, the Federation will be rejuvenated and will restore a climate open to dialogue and constructive collaboration with the teams and FOTA, thus ensuring stability of the regulations and the whole environment.”

“Formula One is about to embark on a new phase: all the stakeholders must work together with an eye to the future, to increase the credibility and interest generated by this sport, tackling the technical and environmental challenges that await it, while keeping unchanged, those characteristics that have made it one of the most popular disciplines on the world stage.”

John Howett, Vice Chairman and Toyota Team Principal added,

“I extend my best wishes to Jean Todt as he takes on this demanding but crucial role. I am convinced that Jean Todt’s presidency represents an opportunity for all Formula One’s stakeholders to unite under his leadership and work together to strengthen our sport. FOTA is looking forward to supporting him to broaden the appeal of our sport among fans and sponsors while respecting Formula One’s great heritage to which he has contributed enormously.”

Todt beat rival challenger Ari Vatenen to the FIA position earlier today, beating him by 135 votes to 49. This also ends the 16 year rule of Max Mosley, who’s final years have been dogged by scandal, in and outside of Formula 1.

Kimi Too Expensive for Toyota

Kimi Raikkonen

Toyota Team President John Howett admits that Kimi Raikkonen is unlikely to join the team because the driver is asking for too much money.

Having admitted to approaching the Finn with what they believed to be a “serious offer in the current market”, Howett seems resigned to missing out on the former World Champion’s services unless he drops his wage demands significantly. Speaking with Motorsport Aktuell Howett said,

“He gave us back a figure that is much too high. He says he has two options, so we are going to wait.”

It is believed that Raikkonen is also in talks with McLaren, the team he spent five years with before joining Ferrari, and that the 30-year-old is requesting 25 million Euros to secure his services.

Kamui Kobayashi in Contention for Toyota

Kamui Kobayashi

Looks like Kamui Kobayashi has put himself in contention for an F1 seat next year, specifically with Toyota following his brave and impressive race debut last week in Brazil.

Toyota team boss John Howett described the debutante’s race:

“He did a fairly good job I think. He got past Fisi with a really good overtaking move and did a really good job to defend against Button and retake it a couple of times. Very impressive for a debut.”

Kobayashi ended the race in 10th position, despite jumping in the car at short notice following Timo Glock’s withdrawal. Glock crashed out at the Japanese Grand Prix, suffering injuries to his chest that would not heal in time for Brazil.

As previously reported, Toyota are also pursuing Kimi Raikkonnen for a drive with the team in 2010, however that looks like it may go nowhere due to the asking price. Jarno Trulli and Glock’s race seats are also not confirmed for next year, leaving Toyota’s options fully open.

On Trulli specifically, Howett said:

“All I know is the position of Toyota towards Jarno is that we don’t exclude the possibility [of keeping him], but there needs to be one or two issues that we get straight.”

Trulli is understood to have discussed the situation with Toyota’s Tadashi Yamashina over the race weekend in Brazil, where he was reported as stating that he will not make any decisions to continue with the team until after their board meeting on November 15th. It is understood that this is where Toyota will decide their future in the sport, as well as the budget for 2010.

Toyota Continue Their Pursuit of Raikkonen

Kimi Raikkonen

Toyota are continuing in their pursuit of Kimi Raikkonen with team president John Howett revealing that they have offered the Finn a contract for next season. Raikkonen is without a 2010 race-seat after agreeing to part ways with Ferrari a year earlier than expect, earning the 2007 World Champion a hefty pay-off.

Subsequent rumours have linked him to a possible move to McLaren while Toyota have also expressed an interest. In fact, Howett says they’ve even put an offer on the table. Howett told Reuters:

“We don’t play too many games. We put on the table what we can afford and what we think is a serious offer in the current market. I think genuinely we could work well with him, give him a car that’s quick. We have had very good relationships with Scandinavian drivers in the rallying times that enjoy life and it works very well, so we could cope with it as a team.”

As for existing drivers, Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock, neither driver is assured of a deal for next season. Howett did, however, admit that the team has made Trulli an offer, although they not sure if he will accept.

“With both drivers we are still maintaining a degree of discussion. We have put an offer on the table with Jarno, I think that he himself is not dissatisfied with the financial offer, the bottom line to some extent is certain issues on the contract and I don’t think they are negotiable from our side.”

“He may well be in the car next year but it’s not at all clear.”

Another option available to the team is Kamui Kobayashi, who made his debut in Brazil, replacing the injured Glock.

“I thought he defended well, he retook Jenson. He’s fearless and did a good job to get past Fisichella.”

“He was a bit off the pace overall but it was very impressive. You have to say we have to give him serious consideration but still pace-wise he was a bit slow so we have to see.”
